The tractor is hanging from its front wheels because the engine is horizontal in this tractor. This was the only way to inspect the engines on the 2-cylinder John Deere tractors.Three of the men are inspecting the engine head on the table. The other three men are examining the cylinders of the tractor.

Description
Instrumentation in the Oliver tractor test car. The large left gauge is for measuring low drawbar load forces, the right one is for large loads. The valves are vibration damping valves. Various gauges, counters, and switches are used for engine rpm, total drive wheel revolutions (for slip measurement), temperatures, etc. The counters were controlleds (on/off) by a photo-electric cell that picked up its signals from markings on the track.

Description
1941. Recording instrument in the Oliver dynamometer car. The large round Gages are used for setting the pull dynamometer load required. The strip chart recorder in the center records the pull dynamometer load over the test distance traveled. The small rectangular gages record wheel revolutions. Other dials record engine rpm, temperatures etc.

1941. Carlton Zink, Director at the lab from 1930-1942, showing an assistant how to use a Planimeter. The traction cylinder recorder creates a trace on a paper strip (shown). The Planimeter follows the trace on the strip of paper and gives the area below the trace on a readout system. From this the average pull is calculated.

Description
1941 Oliver Row Crop 60 HC during test 375. Carlton Zink (in hat) on far left. The other two men are Oliver representatives. The tire is marked "Test K". The tire that is on the rear of the tractor is marked Test F,G,H. They apparently changed tires between some drawbar tests to eliminate the effect of tire wear or to investigate different tire design types. No information on that has been found. The track was in those days occasionally "refreshed' with fine cinders which were rather abrasive. That could have been the reason for these changes. Generally tires were not changed during a test sequence. Sometimes different tires were run through a complete test, and a separate table was then added with the results.
