How to get the most out of your NEA membership
Description
[16 unnumbered pages : color illustrations ; 14x22 cm, “HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR NEA MEMBERSHIP” This promotional giveaway was produced in 1951 by COMMERCIAL COMICS for the NATIONAL EDUCATION ASSOCIATION and bound into the NEA journal for TEACHERS. The “binding” of booklets into the NEA Journal was later imitated by Nestle’s Chocolate in 1955 and Planters Nuts in 1956, and this is where their idea came from. (copycats!) (An interesting point to note about this 1951 NEA educational book is that ALL the characters portrayed in the story are white. A sign of the times, I guess.) Script by MALCOLM ATER, SR.
This is a nifty guide for teachers that belong to the NEA and tells them how to take advantage of all the little perks the association offers. It’s divided up into three sections. These include: (1) USING THE NEA JOURNAL effectively, such as clipping articles of interest and bringing them to the attention of other teachers and parents, (2) USING SPECIALIZED PUBLICATIONS such as committee reports, studies, and how-to-do-its, most of which can be purchased through the NEA at little cost or are free, (3) ASKING for NEEDED FACTS, such as memorandums, booklets, or charts, which are provided by the NEA or if not, the NEA will promptly tell the teacher where they can be obtained, (4) GETTING ADVICE and SUGGESTIONS, where SCORES of SPECIALISTS in a wide range of subjects are ready to give advice either by mail or at the new NEA CENTER in WASHINGTON, and (5) GETTING HELP in the FIELD, where field workers are available to help with tasks such as program planning, membership, and TENURE.
Other points of interest include (6) MAKING FRIENDS for EDUCATION, such as building informed, constructive public opinion. (This is something that is needed; as a West Virginia public school teacher of students with Learning Disabilities for 28 years, it seems like a certain segment of society loves to crap on school teachers for some reason. And, yes, that is depressing, and you ask yourself WHY, so this is a good part of the book, at least for keeping teachers’ spirits up, (7) TAKING PART IN MEETINGS to build up enthusiasm and learn information to take to individual schools, (8) LIFTING the QUALTIY OF TEACHING, such as working for smaller classes and better facilities, (9)WORKING FOR GOOD SCHOOL LEGISLATION where good communication is a two-way street and the NEA keeps the teachers informed of special releases, (10) SEEING THE WORLD where we learn the NEA sponsors tours where THE WORLD IS THE BACKGROUND OF TEACHING, so WHY NOT GO? (11) BUIDLING BRIDGES for the future to help new teachers, because when the supply of teachers is ADEQUATE, the quality of instruction improves, and (12) PLAYING AN ACTIVE ROLE at ALL levels where it is stressed that while teachers are not in the limelight themselves, they play ACTIVE ROLES BACKSTAGE.
The last page of the book lists a DIRECTORY of NEA UNITS ready to help teachers. It’s a really nice book and extremely informative, both for new and veteran teachers, but as a long-time public school teacher myself, I personally wish the public was as supportive as this book. A MUST READ for anyone interested in teaching or for those good people who feel teachers are under appreciated and can use both ENCOURAGING AND EMOTIONAL SUPPORT!
This 5” x 7”, 20-page book (including a 4-page slick cover) is absolutely PACKED with INFORMATION!]
