H̫tel des Artistes, Barbizon, France
Description
Shaded tables filled with diners at the H̫tel des Artistes, Barbizon, France. Cather writes, "We had decided to stop at the H̫tel des Artistes, which, though rather less interesting than Les Charmettes, is rather more reputable for women travelling alone. We entered the hotel through a stone-paved court, which led into the garden, completely enclosed by the various wings of the rambling home. This garden, and it was no small one, was almost entirely roofed by an enomous horse-chestnut tree, under which several dozen small tables were placed. Our rooms faced upon this garden, and we were sheltered from the afternoon sun by the boughs of this mighty tree" (Willa Cather in Europe 121). From Cather's European scrapbook.
