Title
H-Bomb and You
Description
1955 FIRST GIVEAWAY COMIC EVER PRODUCED BY THE U.S. GOVERNMENT ON THE H-BOMB "THE H-BOMB AND YOU" was the very first "warning" comic ever produced by the U.S. government, and on the front cover shows the explosion of the first H-bomb in government testing. Produced in 1955 by Commercial Comics, this promotional giveaway was used to give preparedness and survival tips in case of an H-Bomb attack. Script by Malcolm Ater, Sr. Art by Jack Sparling. This is not a story you would have wanted your elementary age children to have read back in 1955! It's scary! The story opens with a teacher showing her class a movie about the H-Bomb. Her students think the bomb will WIPE OUT entire cities and that everyone will be KILLED, so she explains that they must always be prepared for survival. She relates how in the past "no matter how powerful a new weapon seemed at first, ways were always found to offset its effects and survive..." And she goes on to explain that "the best defense against the H-Bomb is a well-trained CIVIL DEFENSE." She tells her students what they can do to help prepare for civil defense; jobs for boys, jobs for girls, jobs for mothers, and jobs for fathers. She says every family within a 15-mile target area should have a shelter, preferably an underground concrete shelter in the yard. She suggests everyone learn how to give first aid, because if there is an attack there will be HEAVY CASUALTIES! And if there is a warning of attack, it is important to KEEP CALM! This is pretty frightening stuff, especially for kids. But I still vividly remember having "Air Raid" drills in elementary school, kneeling down against the wall in hallways and wrapping our heads in our hands (and praying the kid in front of you didn't cut a fart). And of course we had ugly "Blackout Curtains" in all the classes in case our school got bombed, and yes, some friends did have bomb shelters in their backyards (great places to party when you got older!). So if you remember this stuff, you'll like this book. Not for young kids, since it basically says that if we're attacked, you can kiss your you-know-what goodbye. It's just preparing you for what's ahead. But other than that, it's a really informative guide, something not to look forward to. This 7" x 10" 16-page comic (with a 4-page slick cover) has the interior 16 pages in NM condition, still very securely stapled with very vivid colors and no chips, tears or writing. Really, the interior pages look like they just came off the press! The 4-page slick cover does show a small amount of wear.
