A. M. Palmer, the son of a parson and by profession a lawyer, stumbled into the theatre world through his business acumen. His appearance there signaled the arrival of the producer in the modern sense of the word and a break with the actor-manager tradition. Palmer extended the popularity of such hits as Augustus Thomas's Alabama (1891) by sending them out on the road. Copies of this poster were runoff in quantity and warehoused, awaiting orders giving the name of the theater, dates and any other pertinent information to be inserted at the bottom of a certain quantity of sheets
