Seismic zonation
In an urbanizing or urbanized area, there are areas of greater and lesser seismic risk. Sites along estuaries or on soft fill soils and those areas adjacent to active faults, may experience more violent ground shaking; unstable slopes may fail; liquefiable soils may subside or spread. Seismic zonation is a planning tool to identify relative risk within a region, and to establish migration criteria to reduce exposure to losses
