Willow Shade, the home built by Cather's grandfather William Cather near Gore, Virginia. On the steps are William and his wife Caroline; in the foreground are several individuals, including a man lying on the ground next to a young girl, which may be Charles Cather and his young daughter, Willa. The two women standing in the foreground may be two of Charles's sisters (Alverna, Alfretta, or Virginia), or possibly Jennie Boak Cather, Charles's wife and Willa's mother. One of them is standing next to an infant in a chair, and this may be Alverna Cather Clutter and her child Kyd Clutter. The man standing in the foreground on the left may be Charles's brother-in-law Webb Clutter. The two African-American women sitting in the right foreground were likely employees of the Cather family. The photograph was probably taken in the mid-1870s.
