Willa Cather stands on the balcony of the La Fonda Hotel with a background view down San Francisco Street in Santa Fe, New Mexico, toward the Cathedral of St. Francis. The cathedral was built by Archbishop Lamy, prototype for Cather's Father Latour in her 1927 novel "Death Comes for the Archbishop." Edith Lewis may have taken this photograph during one of their trips to the southwest in 1925 or 1926.
