Wa-pe' or Weapons. The Mon'-de or Bow was made of ash; the mon'de-kon or bow-string of sinew taken from along the spine of the buffalo; the Mon'-de-u-on-he or case for the Bow, the Mon'-zhi-ha or Quiver both made from finely dressed skins; the Mon or Arrow, comprised the principal weapons of the Warrior and Hunter. In the former days the Spear, Battle-club and the Shield were also carried by the Warrior. Every man had a personal mark which he put upon his arrows by which he could identify his shot, but all arrows had each a little groove cut in a wavy line along the length of the shaft to prevent the wood from warping. The measure for an arrow's length was the distance from the wrist to the tip of the middle finger and from thence to the point of the elbow"(La Flesche 1898:10-11).
