Omaha's first all-grade public school opened in 1859. The school had many different locations for over ten years. Then in 1869, the Nebraska State Legislature donated its old capitol building on Capitol Hill to be used for a school. The building was not safe so it was torn down and a new school building was finished in 1872. After only a few years the lower grades moved to other buildings because there were many new people in Omaha, and the building was too crowded. It became Omaha High School. A new, larger building was finished in 1912. It was built around the old building while students were in school. It was renamed Central High School. The building has been remodeled many times. The school has about 2,500 students.
