Jumping Jim Crow became a national rage beginning in 1828, when the performer T. D. Rice introduced the dance at Ludlow and Smith's theater in Louisville, Kentucky ; this painting shows Rice on stage in 1833 at the Bowery Theatre in New York in a production written around the character and dance he had created
