Description:
|
Sketch for the production of Ubu Roi at the Theatre Antoine in 1908 ; it is seen by some to have opened the door for what became known as modernism in the twentieth century and as a precursor to the Theatre of the Absurd and Surrealism. It is the first of three stylized burlesques in which Jarry satirizes power, greed, and their evil practices, in particular the propensity of the complacent bourgeoisie to abuse the authority engendered by success
