GEORGE FULLER EXHIBITION OF PAINTINGS BY GEORGE FULLER, A. N. A. April 9th to 28th, 1917 R. C. & N. M. VOSE 394 & 398 BOYLSTON STREET, BOSTON University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries WE RESPECTFULLY INVITE YOU AND YOUR FRIENDS TO AN EXHIBITION OF PAINTINGS BY GEORGE FULLER, A. N. A. FOR years we have specialized in the works of this, the rarest, and one of the most subjective of all American artists and this group contains several of his greatest piccures, as "Fedalma" and "Girl Driving Turkeys." We beg to remind museum directors and private collectors that Fuller painted many less than one hundred piccures of importance. Many of these are already in art museums or in great collections which will probably be bequeathed to institutions, so that any who hope to distinguish their collections by adding a Fuller certainly will never again find such an opportunity as we offer them for study or for acquisition. R. C. & N. M. VOSE GEORGE FULLER Was born in Deerfield, Massachusetts, 1822, and died in Brookline, 1884. His early life was in Deerfield, Boston and New York. Upon the death of his father in 1859, he felt it his duty to return to Deerfield and take charge of the ancestral farm, in spite of the sacrifice of his loved art. Before settling down, however, he gave five months to a tour of Europe and this opportunity to study the world's masterpieces was a never ending source of happiness and inspiration. Much as we regret the fifteen years during which his art, while far from forgotten, was necessarily given second place in his attention, it is quite possible that this long period of intimacy with Nature and the very isolation from fellow artists, their ideas and methods, gave us the unique pictures his brush produced when he again in 1875 began to devote himself to painting. Some there are who cannot understand, and others who frankly deride Fuller's work, saying that he did not know how to paint. The former we cordially invite to make repeated visits to our exhibition, giving them all assurance that such study will be richly repaid. For the latter we quote Fuller's reply to a young critic of his work who attempted to correct his "errors" : "If I possessed such a correct eye and clever hand I would be willing to lay down my palette for life." His art is entirely subjective; his pictures beautiful color harmonies - rich but subdued-delightfully mysterious -subtly suggestive-inviting the beholder to pass through the frame and revel in a new fairyland created in the dreams of t9J.s poet painter of the beautiful Deerfield Valley. ,.; u Fedalma " - Fuller CATALOGUE I.
