The sacrifices of Greece in the Second World War, by the Greek Office of Country and Town Planning and the Ministry of Reconstruction; printed by Aspioti-Elka Graphic Arts Ltd. in Athens, 1946. Bound in blue board with a map of Greece on front cover. Parallel text - on cover and within - in Greek, French, English and Russian (Cyrillic script). Includes a dedication, introduction, table of contents (following content) and a colophon with the imprint on the final printed page of volume. Collation: [12] pages, 90 leaves of plates, [10] pages. The 90 plates contain a total of 50 maps, 20 charts, 19 diagrams, 57 photographs and 2 illustrations. The maps and other visuals reveal the devastation of the Greek people, land and resources suffered during World War II, beginning with the Occupation of Greece by the Axis Powers, which began in April 1941 after Nazi Germany invaded Greece to assist its ally, Fascist Italy, which had been at war with Allied Greece since October 1940. The Introduction illustrates the ultimate theme of the atlas: "When the Axis struck at Greece, the whole Greek people fought as one man ... The Greek people, the whole Greek race, the county and the state paid dearly in this fight during the war and during the occupation. And the price was … heavier than that of any other country in the world, and beyond the powers of the Greek people and of the state. The aim of this book is to give to the international public opinion a summary picture of the price paid by the Greek people in the defense of the great ideals of freedom and justice …" In addition, the explanation to the table of contents explains the atlas production: The general data which were used in the compiling of this album were collected during the Occupation by the Office of Town and Country Planning attached to the Ministry of Public Works ... The collection and classification of incoming information, the bringing up to date of existing data, and the drawing of maps and diagrams, were carried out originally by the Office of Town and Country Planning. Later on, when this Office was incorporated to the Ministry of Reconstruction, this work as well as the work of printing and presentation of the Album was undertaken by this Ministry … The work started in May 1941 and was first exhibited, in presence of the Government, in the Office of Country and Town Planning just after the Country’s liberation in November 1944. In April, May, and June of 1945 it was exhibited in Paris and London as well as of the U.N.O. Conference in San Francisco. The printing was started in June 1945 at the printing works of the Aspioti-Elka Graphic Arts Ltd and was terminated in July 1946. (Volume title and imprint transcriptions here maintain full capitalization in order to capture the Greek and Russian capitalized scripts as they appear within the work; French and English also presented in all capitals, as they appear within the work.) WARNING: Some of the photographic images are difficult to see, due to their graphic documentation of sickness and death. Please proceed with caution, especially sensitive individuals.
