Pageant of the states by Dr. Ernest Sutherland Bates and Dr. Herman S. Schiff ; Foreward by Grover Whalen, President, New York World's Fair, 1939 ; Introduction by Frank Monaghan, PH. D. ; maps by Norman Reeves. Random House, New York. Officially approved by the New York World's Fair, 1939.
Pub Note:
Atlas of the United States by Ernest Sutherland Bates, created for the New York World's Fair of 1939. Contains pictorial maps of 48 states (Alaska and Hawaii both became states later, in 1959). Table of contents lists maps both in alphabetical order and in order of their charters or of their admission. Maps appear in order of their charters or of their admission. Maps show political boundaries with bordering states, coastlines and major rivers. Whimsical depictions illustrate significant sites within the states, both natural and manmade, as well as resources, including minerals, agricultural and manufactured items. Each map accompanied by historical text describing the state. A preface and text on democracy precede maps. In the Preface, Grover Whalen posits that "the 'Pageant of the States' fits in so well with many of the objectives of the New York World's Fair of 1939 ... The Fair is commemorating the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the inauguration of George Washington as the first president of the United States under the Federal Constitution ... this book will give the reader a new and stirring picture of Democracy in the making. Here is the epic of America in its infinite variety and in its massive strength. The changing moods and the poetic flashes of the text are well matched by the rich beauty of the maps ... " (Dates in full titles of maps taken from titles as listed on contents page.)
