Pub Note:
This Atlas of Africa was developed to commemorate the centennial of Justus Perthes, Geographische Anstalt (Geographical Institute) in Gotha, towards a better understanding of African exploration and mapping at the end of the nineteenth century. It was first published in 1885 (this copy) following the Berlin West Africa Conference of 1884, and went through two further editions by 1892. It Consists of 12 folding maps and an index sheet, comprising ten sectional maps, with map title and legend on sheet 3, and two supplements: 1. Hohen- und Tiefen Ubersicht von Afrika. 2. Ethnographische Ubersicht von Afrika. Issued with a descriptive leaflet accompanying each map, which details how the map was compiled and lists the sources used. Maps show countries, regions, districts, populations, cities, towns, water bodies, rivers, lakes, colonial possessions, roads, railroads, canals, shipping routes, explorers’ itineraries and travel accounts. Bound in half leather brown marbled paper covered boards with with the title "Spezial Karte von Afrika" in gilt on spine. Includs color coded key to European possessions in Africa. Flamsteed projection. Relief shown by shading, hachures and spot heights. Prime meridian is Greenwich. Atlas accompanied by 2 inserted sheets issued as supplement to "Journal des Debats, Politiques et literaires" including descriptive text. and 3 maps: L'Afrique en 1890; Itineraire du voyage du Capitaine Binger, and Madagascar
