This volume includes four important reports of US military expeditions in the west and southwest during 1849 and 1850. The maps and plates are part of the Report by Lieut. J. H. Simpson of an expedition into the Navajo country, which includes some of the first descriptions and views of the area around Canyon de Chelly and Chaco Canyon in New Mexico. 250 pages, 75 lithographed plates, some colored, plans, views and 2 folded maps: "Reconnoissances of Routes from San Antonio De Bexar To El Paso Del Norte," and "Map of the Route pursued in 1849 by the U.S. Troops...In an Expedition against the Navajos Indians." Maps Include rivers and some topographical features. The plates are numbered 1-75, but there were no plate numbers 2, 21, or 39 as issued. Plates and maps show the land explored, the natives encountered, rock inscriptions, etc. Bound in brown embossed cloth covers with title "Reconnaissances in New Mexico and Texas &c." in gilt on spine.
