Fifth, new and improved edition of Kiepert's Ancient atlas, with two new maps (3rd. and 9th), with title page and 12 folded maps. Published in 1877 by Dietrich Reimer. Title page in German and maps in Latin. Maps are outline hand colored, showing political and administrative boundaries, major cities, towns, roads, rivers, canals and mountains. Engraved by J. Sulzer. Relief shown by hachures. Prime meridians are Paris and Greenwich. Bound in brown marbled paper with black lettering "Atlas Antiquus ..." pasted on cover. Geographer Heinrich Kiepert (1818-1899) is generally considered to be one of the most important scholarly cartographers of the second half of the 19th century.
