Hand colored. Relief shown by hachures. Francois-Sulpice Beudant (1787-1850) was a French mineralogist and geologist sent in 1818 on a scientific expedition to Hungary (and associated dominions) by the French court. The results of his researches, Voyage minéralogique et géologique en Hongrie, 3 vols 4to, with atlas, published in 1822, established for him a European reputation. His detailed account of this expedition contains descriptions of opal deposits and the opal mining industry.
