An unknown (to Phillips) first edition published in 1882 (the first Phillips listing is 1883). Most of the U.S. state maps are entirely different from the 1883 edition maps - the titles are in round ovals and begin with "New Railroad and County Map of..." and they are hand colored as compared with the printed color of the 1883 edition maps. The few state maps without the oval titles are in printed colors as are the world and foreign maps, similar to the 1883 edition maps. Cram probably could not afford to keep the atlas price as inexpensive as he wanted with hand coloring, so he switched to machine color for all the maps the next year. Relief shown in hachures.
