This is the earliest map of the Pennsylvania Oil District that we have seen. It predates the 1865 maps by Beers, Colton and Plumb, Townsend and Dale, Hunt, and Howe (1866). It is large scale and shows excellent detail. Individual wells are shown, and operating wells are distinguished from wells being drilled. An extension flap is attached to the upper left corner of the map showing the East Branch of Oil Creek. Folded into dark green textured cloth covers 18.5x10 with "Map Of The Oil District" in gilt. Not in Streeter (unusual because Streeter has all the other important Oil maps) or any references. Scarce.
