Accompanies Winterbotham's Historical..View (see our #2805). The second American Atlas published in the United States. Five of the maps (North America, South America, West Indies, U.S., Kentucky, and Washington) were direct copies of the maps in the London edition of Winterbotham, 1795, by J. Russell. The other fifteen state maps were original, although some think they were derived from Carey's American Atlas of 1795. A limited number of copies included the map of Washington, D.C., present in this copy in the first state(with J. Reid, L. Wayland and C. Smith listed as publishers), but separate from the atlas, backed (see our #5160). Covers are half leather, marbled paper covered boards with "U.S. Atlas. Reid. 1796" stamped in gilt.
