Summary:
The painting was made by Thomas Maitland Cleland for the West Virginia Pulp & Paper Company, manufacturers of Westvaco mill brand papers, for use in their advertising campaigns and annual calendars. This painting, is one of two, titled "Industry" and "Export." They were later owned by Melbert B. and Mary Flagler Cary. "Industry" appeared on the paper company's 1934 calendar.
