Narrative description:
Investment schemes. [The useful and useless merchant.] A garden or maze is guarded by 1) Truth on a throne with an owl, on her right is 2) Justice with a balance or scale and 3) Wisdom holding an oval shield. Before this group is an altar with a flaming heart. On the other side is 4) Wealth seated on a throne on clouds. Under her feet is the caduceus of Mercury and at her side sits a dragon. Windheads represent winds blowing all around. A money-seeking merchant holds a bag of coins. Deceit with a mousetrap on her head points the way to the merchant. A third merchant enters the image in the middle. The 14 figures represented are identified by numbers at the bottom of the image. In the background is a maze with people lost in it. Includes a fountain with a cock perched on a globe on which is a fleur de lis. At the back of the garden is a temple with light from the symbols of the Trinity and a triumphal arch.
